The highest scoring presidents of Algeria. |
A unique candidate was also a tradition until 1988. Thus, Houari Boumediene was the only candidate running in 1976, just like his successor Chadli Bendjedid who faced no rival when he ran in 1979, 1984 and 1988. In this regard, 1995 was a historical date as it saw four candidates running for election, among whom Liamine Zeroual. He remains the lowest-scoring president of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria with 61.34% of votes.
Pluralism was maintained in the following elections, that is, formally speaking: in 1999, seven candidates ran for presidency. Six withdrew before the first turn. Abdelaziz Bouteflika was then elected with 73.5% of votes. In 2004, the incumbent president outperformed his five competitors and collected 84.99% of votes in his favour. Abdelaziz Bouteflika bettered his score in 2009 by obtaining 90.24% of votes.
